Girl Boss Tip To Overcoming Powerlessness

Jan 21, 2020

Have you ever been in a situation where no matter what you did, it felt like you couldn't control anything?

Well, this was what my 20s felt like back then. I used to think I had no control of my life and that I was a victim of my circumstances.

However, it wasn't until I reached a point in my life, where I couldn't take it anymore and decided to end the madness. I finally got some fantastic guidance from mentors who taught me how to shift my life around.

If you're currently facing a similar situation where no matter what you're doing, you can't control anything?

The following is one very powerful exercise I did, which I helped in shift my whole life around and broke this cycle of feeling like a victim of circumstances.

WHAT ARE YOU ASSUMING

Is there something about yourself you have been holding on to, which falsely assumes something about who you are in life. Like, did once do something you totally regret doing? And now you believe because of that one action. You can never be any different?

Well, take out a piece of paper and divide it into two columns. In the first column at the top write: Negative Actions Taken. Then in the second column, write at the top: Positive Actions Taken.

Starting with Negative Actions Taken, write all the things you regret you did. For example, dating that bad boyfriend for years, going into debt, taken that lousy job, etc. Take five to ten minutes here to fill this column.

Now, think about all the things you have done in your life that are positive. For instance, gotten your degree, scored a great job, tried salsa dancing, moved across the country on your own, etc. Take about five to ten minutes and write all of these down.

Now compare your list. Do you see more positive things done, than negative things you regret?

More than likely, yes, you do.

You've done more positive actions in your life, than the negative ones we regret. However, we are placing more weight on the negatives, even when, in reality, they are not, so you're putting an assumption you are a negative person. Yet, the facts are, you are a positive person because you've done much more positive things than negative.

When we start to shift our assumptions on, we are a person who takes more positive actions than negative. It changes your perspective of your circumstances because you begin to look at your uncontrollable situation from how you can make something positive out of a situation when you feel stuck — giving you immediate inner power.

Try this exercise today. You'll find it will empower your Girl Boss life tenfold.
